WEIRTON — The tree was lit, and so was the sky above north Weirton Sunday night.
The City of Weirton and Renaissance Weirton hosted the city’s annual Light the Night tree lighting, complete with live entertainment, free refreshments and a fireworks display following the lighting of the community Christmas tree.
“This is our fourth light up in the city of Weirton,” Mayor Harold Miller said, while welcoming the crowd gathered at the intersection of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. “It’s grown every year.”
The evening included performances by DeJaVu and the Hancock County Museum Victorian Carolers, as well as refreshments provided by Granato’s Deli and Mike Larch and Son Heating and Cooling, with popcorn from Cove Presbyterian Church, and an appearance from Santa Claus, who walked through the crowd greeting area youth.
Sunday’s festivities also featured a “Stuff a Police Cruiser and Firetruck” collection of non-perishable food and toys, and the unveiling of this year’s Success in Unity Christmas ornament, sponsored by Nathan Mazur USI Insurance Services, and reflecting the Greek heritage of Weirton.
Miller also took time to express his appreciation to the event’s sponsors.
“You’ll notice many are active in our community,” Miller said. “They’re always supportive of our efforts.”
