Frontier Group unveiled plans to construct a 40 megawatt solar farm in the Weirton Region. This project will be developed and operated by One Sun, a national solar energy company headquartered in Albuquerque, NM. The project is planned for the central area of Brown’s Island and will include 118,000 to 120,000 solar panels with an estimated cost of $41 million.
Frontier Group of Companies, owner of the former steel-making property in Weirton where Brown’s Island is located, believes this will be the largest solar power farm in West Virginia. The area of Weirton historically has housed coal, steel and heavy manufacturing industries, so “green energy” should be viewed as a great opportunity for the area and residents.
This Brown’s Island investment is expected to bring new jobs, new tax revenue and new growth to Weirton. It is also an opportunity to attract other businesses, especially those connected to solar energy.
With the days of large-scale steel manufacturing in Weirton now gone, development and marketing of the Weirton Area Reuse Plan and the thousands of acres owned by the Frontier Group should be a catalyst for new businesses and jobs in Weirton.
